The Polymath’s Profession

Director. Social worker. Public relations manager. Cataloguer. Faculty liaison. Researcher. Teacher. Project manager. These are just a few of the roles that librarians can fill. I have a hard time thinking of a career with greater variety and opportunity! What is truly magical about this profession is the ability to bring in your outside interests. Have an interest in X? Find a way to turn it into a research sabbatical. Art skills? Create phenomenal displays. Love politics? Get involved with library advocacy. Myself? Outside of my required daily duties, I’ve been actively pursuing:

  • Public speaking opportunities
  • Leadership development
  • Fundraising
  • Social networking
  • PR strategies

There will always be a place for your skills and interests, if you have the creativity and courage to bring them into your career.
